Providing a sustainable solution to Senegal’s fossil fuel question
Establishment of Jord's first project
Jord initiated its operations in 2017 in northern Senegal, acquiring 70 hectares of marginal and degraded land. In this region, Jord cultivates perennial C4 grass, serving as the primary feedstock for pellet and biochar production.
Objectives of Jord Senegal
In Senegal, Jord aims to establish a cutting-edge pellet and biochar production facility with a capacity of 30,000 tons annually. This initiative will promote renewable fuels, restore degraded lands, and support sustainable agricultural practices, while also contributing to local job creation and economic development.
Jord focuses on four main SDGs
Affordable and clean energy
Jord is bringing clean energy to Senegal with the capabilities of replacing other current and emissions-heavy fuels. Jord impact is helping to reduce carbon emissions and improve lives.
Creating green jobs and economic growth
In Senegal, we’re creating jobs and investing in skills training to drive sustainable growth. We’re building a stronger, more inclusive economy by helping communities thrive..
Cutting carbon emissions in Senegal
We’re tackling climate change in Senegal by promoting clean energy and sustainable practices. Our goal is to cut carbon emissions and build resilience for a healthier future.
Restoring marginal and degraded lands
We’re protecting Senegal’s ecosystems by restoring degraded land and promoting sustainable land use. Our focus is on restoring and conserving biodiversity for a healthier future.
Co-benefits
Transforming Senegal's soil and economy
Soil quality
Improve soil quality and decrease desertification
Senegal's soil degradation and desertification problems endanger agriculture, food security, and jobs, fueling migration. By expanding Jord's operations, we aim to turn degraded lands into productive assets, boosting food security and job creation.
Co-benefits
Job opportunities and economic growth
Rural Senegal, home to 40% of the population, faces high youth unemployment and migration. Strengthening these communities is key to reversing this trend. Jord empowers rural areas by building local supply chains, promoting fair trade, and creating jobs in renewable energy, agriculture, and infrastructure. These efforts boost local economies, enhance self-sufficiency, and contribute to a more prosperous society.
Co-benefits
Reduce dependency on fossil fuel and boost energy security
Senegal's energy mix relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, despite abundant solar, wind, and biomass resources. Jord supports the transition to renewable energy by producing and promoting C4-grass fuel pellets, aiming to enhance the national grid and reduce CO₂ emissions.
